Gautama Buddha

Siddhartha Gautama, Shakyamuni, Tathagata

🕉️ buddhism 📅 c. 563 BC - c. 483 BC 📍 Lumbini, Nepal

📖 Life & Biography

Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha (the Awakened One), was a spiritual teacher from ancient India whose teachings founded what we now call Buddhism. Born a prince of the Shakya clan in Lumbini (modern-day Nepal), he renounced his royal life at 29 after witnessing suffering in the world.

After years of severe asceticism and deep meditation, he attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya under the Bodhi tree at the age of 35. For the next 45 years he travelled across northeastern India, teaching the Dharma to people of all backgrounds. His first discourse, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, introduced the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path — the foundation of Buddhist teaching.

The Buddha passed away at Kushinagar around 483 BCE, entering Parinirvana. His teachings spread across Asia and the world, giving rise to Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhism, traditions still followed by over 500 million people today.

🌟 Teachings & Philosophy

📿 Core Teachings

The Four Noble Truths: life involves suffering (dukkha); suffering arises from craving; cessation of craving ends suffering; the Eightfold Path leads to that cessation.
The Noble Eightfold Path: Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, Right Concentration.
Impermanence (Anicca): all conditioned phenomena are transient.
Non-self (Anatta): there is no fixed, permanent self.
Interdependence (Pratityasamutpada): all phenomena arise in dependence on causes and conditions.

💭 Philosophy

The Buddha taught a Middle Way between self-indulgence and harsh asceticism. He emphasised direct investigation of experience over blind faith or metaphysical speculation. His pragmatic approach asked: does this belief lead to suffering or to its cessation? Nirvana — the complete extinguishing of craving, aversion, and ignorance — was presented not as a distant reward but as accessible in this very lifetime through meditative practice and ethical living.
