The Masters and the Path
About This Book
The Masters and the Path is C.W. Leadbeater's most ambitious and comprehensive account of the spiritual hierarchy — the Ascended Masters who, in the Theosophical framework, have completed their human evolution and now serve as the guides and teachers of humanity from higher planes of existence. Drawing on his claimed clairvoyant access to the Master KH (Kuthumi), the Master M (Morya), and other members of the Brotherhood of Adepts, Leadbeater describes their personal characteristics, their ashrams, their methods of working with disciples, and the specific stages of the initiatory path through which aspirants progress toward mastership themselves.
The book is both a map of the spiritual hierarchy and a detailed account of the initiatory path as Leadbeater understood and claimed to have personally witnessed it — including descriptions of the actual ceremonies of the four initiations (stream-entry, once-returning, non-returning, and arahat in Buddhist terminology, reframed in Theosophical language) that mark the major thresholds of spiritual development. Whatever one makes of the clairvoyant claims, the framework has been enormously influential: the concept of Ascended Masters working with humanity and the specific language of initiatic thresholds has shaped the entire subsequent New Age movement.
What You'll Learn
• Understand the Theosophical conception of the spiritual hierarchy: the various levels of Masters, their characteristics and areas of responsibility, their relationship to specific religious and cultural streams of humanity's development, and how they communicate with and influence incarnate disciples
• Grasp the four initiations as Leadbeater describes them: the specific qualities and capabilities developed at each threshold, the ceremonies that mark the transitions, and the commitments that each level of initiation entails
• Recognise the qualities the tradition identifies as prerequisites for approaching the initiatory path: specific ethical standards, the development of particular virtues, the control of the lower nature, and the cultivation of genuine spiritual aspiration distinguishable from mere ambition
• Learn the structure of the ashram system as Leadbeater presents it: how groups of disciples are gathered around a specific Master, the nature of their training, the methods through which the Master's influence operates in their lives, and the degrees of closeness to the Master's consciousness
• Appreciate the historical influence of this framework: how Leadbeater's specific account of Masters and initiations shaped Alice Bailey's voluminous subsequent transmission, the entire I AM Activity movement, and the broader New Age tradition of ascended master teachings
