Infinite Intelligence
About This Book
Infinite Intelligence is one of Meher Baba's most philosophically ambitious works — presenting a detailed metaphysical account of how the Infinite Consciousness that is the ground of all existence evolves through its own creation, using the energy of evolution to move from the apparent unconsciousness of the mineral through the instinctual consciousness of the animal to the full self-awareness of the human being and ultimately to the God-consciousness in which the evolutionary journey reaches its completion. The central paradox that drives the work is the question of why God — who is already infinite, already omniscient, already omnipotent — would create a universe at all, and specifically why God would create it in such a way that the divine consciousness apparently forgets itself and must undergo the entire arc of evolution to recover what it never actually lost.
Baba's answer — developed with striking philosophical precision — is that God's motivation for creation is not need (God needs nothing) but enjoyment: the infinite intelligence of God creates the finite cosmos as a form of divine play (the Sanskrit lila) in which the drama of forgetting and remembering, of limitation and liberation, provides the infinite with the specific experience of contrast and adventure that infinite bliss alone cannot offer. The evolutionary process is therefore not a cosmic mistake to be corrected but a divinely intended drama whose every apparently painful stage is a necessary part of the whole — and whose completion in God-consciousness is not a return to a pre-existing state but the achievement of something genuinely new: infinite consciousness that now knows itself through the contrast of having forgotten itself.
What You'll Learn
• Understand the evolution of consciousness framework: Baba's detailed account of how consciousness evolves from the mineral through the vegetable, animal, and human kingdoms — what specifically develops at each stage (not the physical form but the consciousness using the form), what the mechanism of evolutionary development is, and how the human stage represents both the completion of unconscious evolution and the beginning of the conscious phase
• Grasp the divine motivation for creation: Baba's answer to the foundational philosophical question of why an already perfect God would create an imperfect world — the concept of divine play (lila), the understanding that infinite consciousness creates finite experience as a form of self-exploration that its infinite nature cannot provide, and how this understanding transforms the interpretation of suffering from cosmic mistake to dramatic necessity
• Recognise the involution-evolution structure: how Baba maps the complete arc of divine consciousness — from the original infinite unconsciousness (the void before creation) through the involution into matter (the increasing density of physical forms) through the evolution back toward consciousness (the arc of biological and human development) to the final achievement of God-realisation (infinite consciousness with full self-knowledge)
• Learn the human significance: what Baba says makes the human stage specifically significant in this scheme — why human beings alone have the capacity to achieve God-realisation, what the specific spiritual practices that accelerate this achievement are, and what the relationship is between individual human evolution and the cosmic evolutionary process
• Appreciate the philosophical precision: how Infinite Intelligence represents one of the most carefully reasoned metaphysical accounts in the entire twentieth-century spiritual literature — combining the visionary scope of the great mystical cosmologies with a philosophical precision and logical coherence that makes it exceptionally valuable as both inspiration and intellectual challenge
