Swami Sivananda

Kuppuswami (birth name), Sivananda of Rishikesh, the Sage of Sivanandanagar

πŸ•‰οΈ vedanta-hindu πŸ“… 1887 - 1963 πŸ“ Pattamadai, Tamil Nadu, India

πŸ“– Life & Biography

Swami Sivananda was one of the most prolific and influential yoga masters of the twentieth century, a man whose personal simplicity and ceaseless activity produced over 300 books and one of the world’s most widespread spiritual organisations. Born in Pattamadai, Tamil Nadu into a devout family, he trained as a physician and spent nearly a decade practising medicine in Malaysia, where his experience of human suffering deepened his commitment to both medicine and spirituality.

In 1923, drawn by an irresistible inner call, he renounced his medical practice and came to Rishikesh. He was initiated as a sannyasi (monk) by Swami Vishwananda Saraswati and began his life of intensive spiritual practice along the banks of the Ganga. He meditated in simple caves, served pilgrims on the steep mountain paths, and began writing β€” a habit that would never leave him. He founded the Divine Life Society in 1936 and the Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy in 1948 in Rishikesh, institutions that became training grounds for hundreds of teachers.

His genius was synthesis and accessibility. Where Vivekananda had pointed to the unity of yoga paths theoretically, Sivananda lived it practically β€” practising meditation and selfless service in equal measure, studying philosophy while attending to the sick, teaching jnana yoga to scholars and kirtan (devotional singing) to the simplest pilgrims. His motto β€” ‘Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realise’ β€” compressed his entire vision into six words.

His students include Swami Satchidananda, Swami Chidananda, Swami Venkatesananda, and Swami Vishnudevananda β€” each of whom went on to found influential teaching traditions of their own, making Sivananda’s lineage perhaps the most widespread yoga lineage in the modern world.

🌟 Teachings & Philosophy

πŸ“Ώ Core Teachings

Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realise β€” the six pillars of spiritual life. Integral yoga: the synthesis of jnana, bhakti, karma, and raja yoga. The necessity of a guru. Daily sadhana (spiritual practice) without interruption. Service of humanity as service to God.

πŸ’ Philosophy

Sivananda's philosophy is a democratic synthesis of the four classical yoga paths β€” seeing each as a necessary dimension of complete development. He was allergic to exclusivism: every path is valid, every name of God is sacred. His approach was also radically practical β€” he believed that spiritual life must be integrated into every moment of daily activity, not reserved for formal practice sessions.
