Swami Satchidananda

C.K. Ramaswamy Gounder (birth name), the Woodstock Guru

πŸ•‰οΈ vedanta-hindu πŸ“… 1914 - 2002 πŸ“ Chettipalayam, Tamil Nadu, India

πŸ“– Life & Biography

Swami Satchidananda is known in the West primarily as the ‘Woodstock Guru’ β€” the serene, white-robed figure who opened the Woodstock Music Festival in August 1969 with a message of peace and unity that set the tone for one of the most iconic cultural events of the twentieth century. Yet this encounter with the counterculture was entirely characteristic of a life devoted to making spiritual truth available to everyone, everywhere, in whatever form they needed it.

Born in Tamil Nadu in 1914, he spent years working in business and raising a family before the death of his wife pushed him toward a life of renunciation. He studied under Swami Sivananda at the Divine Life Society in Rishikesh, where he absorbed the spirit of integral yoga β€” the synthesis of all paths β€” and was eventually initiated as a sannyasi. Sivananda sent him to Sri Lanka to teach, and from there his teaching career expanded across the world.

He arrived in New York in 1966 for what was meant to be a brief visit β€” at the invitation of the artist Peter Max β€” and stayed for the rest of his life, founding the Integral Yoga Institute and training thousands of teachers. He synthesised the teaching of Sivananda with an extraordinary sensitivity to the Western psychological situation, emphasising the unity of all religions at their inner depth and the importance of a flexible, non-dogmatic approach to practice.

He established the Light of Truth Universal Shrine (LOTUS) at the Satchidananda Ashram in Virginia β€” a temple dedicated simultaneously to all the world’s major religions, in which each tradition has its own chapel and all are given equal honour. This architectural statement in brick and stone perfectly captures his vision: one truth, many expressions.

🌟 Teachings & Philosophy

πŸ“Ώ Core Teachings

Truth is one, paths are many. Integral Yoga as the synthesis of all yoga paths, adapted to individual temperament. The unity of all religions in their inner essence. Peace begins with the individual. Non-violence (ahimsa) as both spiritual and social principle.

πŸ’ Philosophy

Swami Satchidananda's philosophy is one of radical inclusion: all names of God are equally valid, all sincere spiritual paths lead to the same goal, and the purpose of all spiritual practice is the same β€” peace. He emphasised that genuine yoga is not gymnastics but a complete inner transformation, and that a peaceful world can only be built by peaceful individuals β€” inner peace is the prerequisite of outer peace.
