Paramahansa Yogananda

Mukunda Lal Ghosh, Swami Yogananda

🕉️ vedanta-hindu 📅 1893 - 1952 📍 Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India

📖 Life & Biography

Paramahansa Yogananda (1893–1952), born Mukunda Lal Ghosh in Gorakhpur, India, was the first great Indian teacher to settle in the West, establishing a permanent bridge between Eastern and Western spirituality. His Autobiography of a Yogi, first published in 1946, has never been out of print and has been named one of the 100 most important spiritual books of the 20th century.

Initiated into Kriya Yoga by his guru Sri Yukteswar Giri, Yogananda came to America in 1920 and spent over three decades teaching across the continent. He founded the Self-Realization Fellowship in 1920, whose Lessons in Kriya Yoga have guided millions of practitioners worldwide. He demonstrated through his own life — and the remarkable lineage of his teachers (Lahiri Mahasaya, Sri Yukteswar, Babaji) — that the highest states of spiritual consciousness are reproducible through systematic practice.

His commentary on the Bhagavad Gita (God Talks with Arjuna) and his interpretation of the teachings of Jesus Christ (The Second Coming of Christ) reveal the underlying unity between Eastern and Western mysticism. He left his body in 1952 while speaking at a banquet — displaying the physical signs of mahasamadhi. His body showed no sign of decay for 20 days after death, documented by the Forest Lawn Memorial Park director.

🌟 Teachings & Philosophy

📿 Core Teachings

Kriya Yoga: an ancient technique of breath and energy control (pranayama) that accelerates spiritual evolution by calming the mind and withdrawing life force from the senses.
The unity of all religions: the same God sought by Hindus, Christians, Muslims, and Buddhists under different names.
Self-realisation: direct experience of one's identity with the infinite — beyond belief, dogma, or ritual.
The spine as the key spiritual channel: the chakras and their awakening through yogic practice.
Divine love as the highest human experience — love that includes all beings without condition.

💭 Philosophy

Yogananda's great contribution was to present yoga not as mere physical exercise but as a scientific system for direct experience of God. His approach was experimental: practise Kriya Yoga, observe the inner effects, verify the results in your own consciousness. He drew parallels between the insights of quantum physics and ancient Vedanta, between the teachings of Jesus and of Krishna, revealing the perennial philosophy beneath religious diversity. He emphasised that God-realisation is the birthright of every human being — not reserved for monks and saints alone.
