Guru Nanak

Nanak Dev Ji, Baba Nanak, Nanak Shah Fakir

🕉️ sikhism 📅 1469 - 1539 📍 Nankana Sahib, Pakistan

📖 Life & Biography

Guru Nanak (1469–1539 CE) was the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. Born in Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan), he showed a contemplative nature from childhood, often absorbed in spiritual reflection rather than worldly affairs.

At age 30, he experienced a profound divine revelation while bathing in the Bein river: he disappeared into the waters for three days and emerged transformed, declaring: “There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim.” This experience marked the beginning of his teaching mission. For the next 24 years he undertook four great journeys (Udasis), travelling across South Asia, the Middle East, and Central Asia — as far as Baghdad and Mecca — sharing his message of the One God and the equality of all human beings.

Guru Nanak composed exquisite sacred poetry in multiple languages. His 974 hymns, compiled in the Guru Granth Sahib — the living scripture and eternal Guru of the Sikhs — remain the foundation of Sikh worship and theology. He established the practice of langar (community kitchen), where all people, regardless of caste or religion, share a meal as equals.

🌟 Teachings & Philosophy

📿 Core Teachings

Ik Onkar: there is One God, creator of all, beyond all names and forms.
Naam Japna: remembering and meditating on God's Name as the core spiritual practice.
Kirat Karni: earning an honest living through righteous labour.
Vand Chakna: sharing one's earnings and time with others, serving the community.
The Five Evils (Kam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh, Ahankar — lust, anger, greed, attachment, ego) are the veils that obscure divine reality.
Sangat (holy company) and Seva (selfless service) as pillars of spiritual life.

💭 Philosophy

Guru Nanak taught that God is formless, beyond all religious categories, yet intimately present within every heart as the divine Name (Naam). The path to God requires no pilgrimages, no rituals, and no priestly intermediaries — only sincere remembrance, ethical conduct, and selfless service. He explicitly rejected the caste system and the subjugation of women. His vision was radically universal: the same divine light dwells in every human being regardless of religion, gender, or birth.
